Does anyone know the proper way to drive a golf ball?

I have trying to teach myself how to drive a golf ball for a couple of years now. I still have no success at this present time. My grip and swing are disastrous, what type of aid should I buy to help me overcome these issues? I can't afford private lessons so please no recommendations of that nature.|||Watch lots and lots of golf videos and there are lot of clips on the net

Good luck with it|||well i recomend getting a book, for your grip you want to hold the club in your fingers not your palm because you get more motion, on your back swing, go back until your shoulder hits your chin and dont look back on your backswing keep your eye on the ball at all times, when you go through with your swing dont move your back leg to much then you will lose your balance thats just some basic stuff but i recomned getting book thats filled with methods to improve your game|||Try to use a fairway wood first, or a small iron. Drivers and long irons are the hardest to hit (especially 3 iron for that matter). Build up your swing and technique then, if successful, move onto a small driver then keep progressing from there.

Practice makes perfect!

P.S. I'm a rookie/amateur too and I rarely use a driver.|||Well, your question is a good one. Many people struggle with a driver, I know that I have. You may want to get fitted with a good driver, or, it does not cost much to have a pro measure your swing speed and check your driver to see if it fits your swing.

You say that your grip is 'disastrous'. I grip a 5 iron the same way that I grip a driver. Consequently, if my grip is disastrous on a driver,or any other club for that matter, I'm in deep doo doo. You can go to U-tube and find many different FREE instructional video's that will explain the different golf grips and why different people choose their grip. Start out by holding the club shaft in your 'fingers',hold the club up holding it only with your fingers. You can overlap or interlock your pinky, whichever suits you. Your hands should 'hinge' freely if you hold that puppy in your fingers, and this will give you more 'feel'.

The best golf aid is information. It took Ben Hogan 11 years to find his golf swing. He had to "Dig it out of the dirt". I'm not saying that you have to beat balls for 8 hrs a day like Ben did. But you do need to 'structure' your practice at the range and work to find the proper way for "you". This is what I hear instructors say many times, the proper way for you as an individual is the most effective.

Shorten up your back swing, low and slow on the back swing.

Don't try and murder the ball, nice smooth swing.

For once I would like to see someone show a video clip of their swing. That would help immensely in regard to giving out advice to improve a persons golf swing.|||You asked a great question. The hard part is not getting you to hold the club correctly, but to do it with using only words. So the first thing is get a book, David Leadbetter The Golf Swing is one of the best. Great pic's so you can understand the proper grip. I also love youtube.com, this is a free site that will give a ton of great information.

Now on to some of my drills I get my students to do.

I love baseball swings. Swing the club level and feel the right hand rolls over the left in the impact zone. You without a doubt can not do this drill too much.

The next drill is to stand with your bum about 4 inches from a wall and swing without putting your club head through the wall. Remember golf is a game played under our body, not around it! This will help keep your swing on plane.

Now you and a means of getting correct information and 2 drills to work on that are sure to help you play better!

Good luck,
